The Zone Urban Epic is more than just an athletic competition: it is a celebration of health, fitness, and active living that brings athletes and spectators together in a city that embraces such a lifestyle. With an entirely new approach to multisport competition, the Zone Urban Epic combines a challenging Olympic distance triathlon with an engaging event experience like no other. Racers compete in a setting that encapsulates the nature of the city – in Portland, athletes swim from an island, transition in a boat-building warehouse, and run along the city’s waterfront. Zone Urban Epic also incorporates the spectators and community into the excitement with a free, urban-inspired festival that includes art, music, entertainment, and a post-race beer garden. Zone Urban Epic brings individuals who might otherwise have no interest in triathlon together with athletes who live to race. The Zone Urban Epic merges all the elements of a city, a community, a diverse population of individuals, and the arts around a central multisport event experience. The Council for Responsible Sport has selected the Zone Urban Epic as one of twelve Seedling Races for 2008. Through great care to use local water, food, and vendors, reduce waste, recycle, and minimize the carbon footprint, Zone Urban Epic is committed to making as small an environmental impact as possible.
