Weekend Race Preview

The weekend race calendar is stacked once again, with hot tri action shaking down worldwide. Here’s a quick glance at where the top pros will be.

Saturday starts out Down Under with the return of theXTERRA Australia championship, reemerging after a six-year hiatus, to kick off from Daylesford, Victoria. Top off-road pros will clash for the cash, including last weekend’s XTERRA Guam winner Andrew Noble, 2006 USA champion Seth Wealing, 2006 International Triathlon Union duathlon world champ Leon Griffin and Aussie Ironman star Chris Legh.

Next we shimmy up the coast to Port Macquarie for one of spring’s sweetest showdowns at Ironman Australia. Last year’s surprise Ironman world champion, Chrissie Wellington, will do battle with perennial Ironman podium placer Kate Major and back-in-action-with-a-vengeance Rebekah Keat of Australia. The men’s field is fierce as well, with Luke Bell, Jason Shortis, Patrick Vernay, Luke McKenzie, Craig McKenzie and Petr Vabrousek vying for gold.

While long-course rock stars tear up Oz, the best of the Olympic-distance storm New Zealand for the New Plymouth BG Triathlon World Cup. Medal-hungry men include last weekend’s Mooloolaba winner Javier Gomez and Aussie Brad Kahlefeldt, who’ll fight off charges from Kiwis Bevan Docherty, Kris Gemmell and Shane Reed. Meanwhile, New Zealand’s Sam Warriner and Andrea Hewiit will battle Austrian Kate Allen and Aussie Emma Moffatt for medals.

Back in the States, the 11th annual Lavaman Triathlon shakes down in Hawaii, with Tyler Stewart, Bree Wee and Chris Lieto on board. And they’ll be swimming with the SEALs at Superfrog in California—a few of InsideTri’s own are taking on this challenge!
